Where does the name Lapis Lazuli come from?
It is for its intense and intriguing color that Lapis Lazuli bears this name. Often confused with Sapphire, for their common deep blue color, Lapis Lazuli was nicknamed “the Star Sapphire” . This referred to the glittering gold flakes on the stone. But it was only in the Middle Ages that the name Lapis Lazuli appeared.
This name comes from different languages. Latin lapis which means stone and azuli, derived from medieval Latin azurium , meaning azure. This word itself is inspired by Persian lazhward , which designates an intense and luminous blue. Lazuli is therefore a mixture of azurium and of lazhward , and means such azure.
History & origin of Lapis Lazuli
Lapis Lazuli is the stone richest in stories and mythologies. 6000 years before Jesus Christ, this mineral adorned sacred objects dedicated to ceremonies. This use proves its great value , and this has continued through the centuries.
At the time of the Egyptians, Lapis Lazuli was a symbol of divine power and life force. The color blue was for them a sign of immortality and infinity. The pharaohs placed Lapis Lazuli amulets in their tombs for protection, in the shape of a scarab or an eye.
The Romans saw this stone as a powerful aphrodisiac which they drank in powder form, mixed with milk. In the Middle Ages, Lapis Lazuli was used more widely as an elixir for strengthen the body and mind . The use of Lapis Lazuli stone for decoration and art is spreading rapidly. Reduced in pigment, the Lapis Lazuli color becomes ultramarine. This stone was used for dyeing fabrics but also in painting, on art objects or canvases. The largest deposits of Lapis Lazuli are found in Afghanistan. Other deposits exist throughout the world, including in Chile where Lapis Lazuli is the national stone. But their blue would be less intense than the stones of Afghanistan.
Composition of the Lapis Lazuli stone
From the silicate family, Lapis Lazuli occurs in certain limestones such as crystalline marble. This stone is mainly composed of lazurite which gives it its deep blue color. It also contains pyrite, which gives it yellow flashes. If there are too many, Lapis Lazuli loses its value. Calcite and solidite are also part of the components of this stone.
It is its pyrite content which determines its density. It is therefore between 2.5 and 3 depending on the stones. Its hardness is 5.5 on the Mohs scale.
